  1. In 2016 Alphabet earned nearly all of its revenue from Google advertising based on users’ search requests.
  2. A hidden revenue generation business model keeps users out of the equation, while it lets other parties finance – in part or entirely – the product or service offered.

There were already significant choke points in global trade, including reduced flows through the drought-stricken Panama Canal, which connects the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. Steering clear of the Red Sea and taking the lengthy detour around the Cape of Good Hope, however, adds around 3,500 nautical miles (4,000 miles/6,500km) and days sailing time to each trip. This requires extra fuel (an additional $1m/£790,000’s worth according to some estimates), possibly finding alternative ports of call, adjustments to delivery timetables, and rising costs. But many companies are making that choice rather than risk attack by missiles and hijackers.

The same year, YouTube added “YouTube Stories”, a feature very similar to “Instagram Stories” where users get to share short, mobile-only videos that expire after 7 days. Launched in 2017, TikTok has obtained more than 700 million users within a year, thanks to its heavy investment in influencer marketing and a novel product that appeals to the young and old alike – especially teenagers.

After each chess player makes their first move, there are 400 potential board setups. Looker simplified the process by taking programming queries and modifying them to read more like natural languages, such as English.

When you sign up for Labs, you can test out projects across Search, Workspace and more, and give feedback directly to the teams who built them. One of our Labs offerings is NotebookLM, our endeavor to reimagine what note-taking software might look like if you designed it from scratch knowing that you would have a powerful AI model at its core.

Schmidt, who previously had held the same positions at the software company Novell Inc., had a doctorate in computer science and melded well with the technocratic impulses of the founders. During Schmidt’s reign as CEO, Page served as president of products, and Brin was president of technology. The trio ran the company as a “triumvirate” until Page took on the CEO role in 2011, Schmidt became executive chairman, and Brin adopted the title of director of special projects.

While Google did come up with the best search engine on the market, he suggests, it was its early success that provided it with the experience and crucially the data to allow it to improve quickly. For instance, Google has created a sustainable business model based on hidden revenue generation, by creating a compelling value proposition for businesses and publishers. A hidden revenue generation business model keeps users out of the equation, while it lets other parties finance – in part or entirely – the product or service offered. A common example is that it’s estimated that there are 1 x ways a game of chess could be played, which is fairly close to a googol. This is a very rough estimate, but it’s easy to see how the number could become so large.

Therefore, the only times a googol is a somewhat accurate estimate of anything is for hypotheticals.
